STEM drone curriculum for schools and teachers

SkyYouth · 6 min read

Most school drone programs fail for the same reason: they buy hardware before they design the learning. Start with outcomes, then choose the gear.

Step 1: Pick one clear outcome

Choose a single goal for the term: e.g. "every student can safely fly a set course" or "every student codes a flight path." One outcome keeps the program finishable.

Step 2: Map a simple arc

  1. Weeks 1–2: Safety, rules and hand control.
  2. Weeks 3–5: Precision flying — hover, turns, landing.
  3. Weeks 6–8: Coding a route or solving a challenge.
  4. Weeks 9–10: Showcase or mini-competition.

Step 3: Choose gear that fits

Step 4: Build in safety and rules

Teach registration, no-fly zones and indoor/outdoor rules from day one. Safety isn't a separate lesson — it's part of every session.

Step 5: Make it visible

Document student projects and share them. Visibility wins buy-in from leadership, parents and the next cohort.

A program students finish teaches more than a syllabus they abandon.

General guidance only. Check your local regulations and school policies before flying.
