Practicing at home: safe drone drills for kids
You don't need a field every day. With the right drone and clear boundaries, small spaces work well.
Set up first
- Right drone — small and guarded for indoors, not a big camera drone.
- Clear the area — remove breakables, add a soft mat, avoid lamps, tanks and mirrors.
- Set rules — low-speed mode, no high flying, never toward people.
Four beginner drills
- Hover hold — stay in one spot for 10 seconds. Builds control.
- Square circuit — fly a box around four points. Builds turning and orientation.
- Table take-off & landing — precise, gentle touch-downs.
- Obstacle weave — cardboard boxes as gates; builds judgement.
Two rules
- An adult is present the whole time, especially for younger kids.
- Short is fine — 15–20 focused minutes beats one long session.
The goal is a little better each time, not the most exciting flight.
Follow local registration and flight rules. Indoor flying still needs care for people and property.
